Washington Commanders Draft Virginia Tech’s Jaylin Lane with 128th Pick

ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Commanders selected Virginia Tech wide receiver Jaylin Lane with the 128th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Lane had an impressive college career, contributing significantly during his time at Middle Tennessee State and Virginia Tech.
In college, Lane racked up 11 touchdowns and over 1,500 receiving yards at Middle Tennessee State before transferring to Virginia Tech. As a Hokie, he surpassed 1,000 receiving yards and scored 10 touchdowns. Despite Virginia Tech finishing the season with a 6-7 record, Lane led the team in receptions with 38.
Lane’s performance peaked during a standout game in September when he earned his first ACC Receiver of the Week honor after catching 106 yards in a 37-17 victory over Old Dominion. His abilities caught the attention of NFL scouts, resulting in an invitation to the NFL Draft Combine in early March.
At the Combine, Lane impressed scouts and was identified as a semi-versatile slot receiver with legitimate long speed. NFL analyst Lance Zierlein noted that Lane can stretch defenses and adds yardage after the catch, although he needs to improve his route-running skills. Zierlein stated, “Lane’s best qualities give him a chance to stick on a roster, but he might need to earn his keep as a return man early on.”
NFL Next Gen Stats assigned Lane an overall rating of 75, suggesting he offers a solid backup potential with the ability to develop into a starter. The Next Gen Stats Draft Model analyzes players’ Combine and college performance to predict their chances of success in the NFL.
