Washington Commanders Release Former First-Round Pick Emmanuel Forbes Jr.
The Washington Commanders made a significant move on Saturday by releasing cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr., who was their first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Forbes was selected with the 16th overall pick and had signed a four-year, $15 million rookie contract that runs through 2026.
Despite his promising draft position, Forbes’s performance on the field has been underwhelming, leading to his release. This decision comes as a surprise to many, given his recent entry into the league and the investment the Commanders had made in him.
The release of Forbes opens up possibilities for other teams to claim him. The Cincinnati Bengals, in particular, have been suggested as a potential destination, given their need for depth in the cornerback position.
Forbes, 23, played college football at Mississippi State before being drafted by the Commanders. His release also coincides with other roster moves, including the placement of running back Austin Ekeler on injured reserve).
