ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Commanders announced Friday they have released defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, a two-time Pro Bowler and first-round draft pick in 2017. The decision comes after the team was unable to reach a trade agreement, marking the end of an eight-year tenure with the organization.

The Commanders originally granted Allen permission to seek a trade after informing him his contract would not be extended. He was entering the final year of his deal, which included a $15.5 million base salary and no guaranteed money remaining. With no viable trade option, the Commanders opted to release him, saving $16.47 million in salary cap space while incurring $6 million in dead money.

Allen, 30, has been a central figure in Washington’s defense since joining the squad, playing 109 games with 108 starts over his eight seasons. He has tallied 401 tackles, including 118 quarterback hits and 42 sacks, ranking 10th in franchise history. His performance during the 2021 and 2022 seasons earned him Pro Bowl selections as he combined for 16.5 sacks, including a career-high of nine in 2021.

A significant injury in the 2024 season limited Allen to just eight games. He suffered a torn pectoral muscle in Week 6 but made a comeback for the final two regular-season games and the playoffs. During his time with the Commanders, he established himself as a durable player, missing only three games in his first six seasons.

With Allen’s departure, Washington aims to move forward with a defensive tackle group that includes Daron Payne, who is under a lucrative contract. The Commanders also drafted another defensive tackle, whose performance during his rookie season likely informed the decision to release Allen. He started 11 games last season, contributing 44 tackles and two sacks.

The release of Allen allows him to enter free agency ahead of the new league year, permitting him an opportunity to explore options with other teams. As he looks for a new team, he remains a respected name in the league and is expected to draw interest given his previous accolades and contributions to the game.
