Nate Herbig Washington Commanders Signing News

ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Commanders have bolstered their offensive line by signing guard Nate Herbig to a one-year contract, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Herbig, 26, who previously played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, returns to the field after missing the entire 2024 season due to a torn rotator cuff sustained in August.

With prior stints at the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets, Herbig has accumulated significant experience. He notably played in all 17 games in 2023, starting two and contributing on 15% of offensive snaps and 13% of special teams snaps. “I’m excited for this opportunity with the Commanders and look forward to contributing to the team’s success,” said Herbig.

The Commanders have been restructuring their offensive line due to various injuries, including an ACL tear for Sam Cosmi in January. They have also made significant adjustments by trading for left tackle Laremy Tunsil this month and restructuring right tackle Andrew Wylie’s contract. Wylie’s versatility allows him to shift between guard and tackle positions as needed.

Washington’s signing of Herbig is a strategic move to add depth to the offensive line. He has demonstrated the ability to play both guard spots effectively. “Nate brings depth and competition to our offensive line, which is crucial as we head into the next season,” commented Commanders head coach Dan Quinn.

Having initially gone undrafted in 2019 out of Stanford, Herbig found his footing with the Eagles, where he notably started 17 games over three seasons. He moved on to the Jets, starting 11 games in 2022 before signing with the Steelers. His trajectory has been affected by various injuries, but the Commanders are hopeful he brings his experience and capability to help shore up their line as they work towards competing in the upcoming season.
