Josh Johnson Washington Commanders Quarterback Signing

Washington, D.C. — The Washington Commanders have re-signed veteran quarterback Josh Johnson to a one-year deal, according to multiple sources. The 38-year-old quarterback returns to Washington, where he previously played in 2018, making three starts that season during a time of injury struggle for the starting quarterbacks.

Johnson was last with the Baltimore Ravens, serving as a backup to Lamar Jackson during the 2024 season. He appeared in six games, completing two of three attempts for a total of 17 yards. Johnson’s extensive NFL journey began when he was drafted in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he has since played for a total of 14 different teams, including the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, and the New York Jets.

During his time with the Commanders in 2018, Johnson stepped into a challenging situation, finishing that season with a record of 1-2 in four games played. His most notable appearance included a tough 24-0 shutout loss against the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite setbacks in his career, his experience has made him a valuable addition to Washington’s quarterback roster.

As the Commanders prepare for the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, Johnson will join a quarterback lineup that features rising star Jayden Daniels, the 2024 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, along with returning backup Marcus Mariota, who signed a one-year deal last month. Johnson is primarily expected to compete for the third-string quarterback position, previously held by Jeff Driskel.

Through 45 career games, Johnson has amassed 2,297 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions, completing 58% of his attempts. His ability to adapt and perform in various roles will be an asset as Washington aims to strengthen its quarterback position for the upcoming season.

Johnson’s return signifies the Commanders’ commitment to building a competitive roster and offers depth in a vital position as they look to improve upon previous campaigns and push toward the playoffs. As training camp and the draft approach, the competition for quarterback spots in Washington will likely intensify.
