EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Washington Spirit is gearing up for the 2025 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season with an eye on championship glory. Under the leadership of head coach Jonatan Giráldez, the team is focused on building upon its thrilling run to the NWSL Championship last season.

After a year marked by coaching changes and a revamped roster, the Spirit aims to capitalize on a promising foundation established in 2024. Giráldez, who is embarking on his first full campaign with the club, highlighted the importance of synchronization among players in executing a high-press and possession-based game. “It’s about speaking the same language in possession and out of possession,” Giráldez stated.

The Spirit, who scored 51 goals last season, the second highest in the league, fell short in the championship due to missed scoring opportunities. Giráldez emphasized the need for his players to not only possess the ball but to utilize it effectively. He wants his squad to create more scoring chances this year.

Returning to the squad is 21-year-old forward Trinity Rodman, who opted to focus on recovery during the offseason instead of participating in international duties. Rodman expressed confidence in the team’s attacking style, stating, “We want to show our creativity so fans can connect with us and find it more interesting to watch.”

To strengthen their roster, the Spirit signed several key players, including a noted captain from the Mexican national team. Giráldez praised her versatility, noting she can contribute both defensively and in the midfield. Additionally, the Spirit brought in another midfielder, expected to fill the gap left by the injured veteran Andi Sullivan, who will miss the season.

Missing from the start of the season are striker Ouleymata Sarr and last year’s rookie sensation Croix Bethune, both recovering from serious injuries. Despite setbacks, Bethune is gradually returning to training; she expressed a desire to fully showcase her potential when back on the field.

Before the season officially kicks off, the Spirit has a chance for redemption in the annual Challenge Cup, facing off against rivals Orlando Pride. The match serves as both a competitive start to the season and an opportunity for the Spirit to avenge their championship loss from the previous year. Giráldez emphasized the cup’s significance in establishing the Spirit’s objectives for the season.

Captain Aubrey Kingsbury encapsulated the team’s readiness, stating, “We’re fired up. We definitely are still a little upset from losing the final. That’s still fresh in our minds, so we want to start off the season with a win.”
