T.J. Watt Negotiates New Contract with Steelers Before 2025 Season

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania—The Pittsburgh Steelers are in negotiations with All-Pro linebacker T.J. Watt for a new contract ahead of the 2025 NFL season.
A report from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette states that while discussions are ongoing, a deal may not be finalized immediately. Watt, 30, is seeking a revision to his current contract, which will enter its final season. His existing five-year, $112 million deal includes $80 million guaranteed.
Steelers management is aiming to secure an agreement before the regular season begins, as per the team’s policy which halts negotiations once games kick off. The team has a three-month window remaining for discussions.
The cost for Watt’s new deal may have increased following the Cleveland Browns’ recent signing of defensive end Myles Garrett to a four-year, $160 million extension, making him the highest-paid defensive player in the league. As a result, Watt’s asking price is expected to rise accordingly.
Watt has excelled throughout his career. He has led the NFL in sacks three times over the past five seasons, including tying the league record with 22.5 sacks in 2021. He has also earned seven Pro Bowl selections and four First-Team All-Pro honors.
Over the last season, Watt recorded 11.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, 61 tackles, and other defensive accolades, further showcasing his impact on the field. The Steelers appear committed to keeping him on the team, as his performance has made him a cornerstone of the franchise.
Watt’s previous contract established him as the highest-paid defensive player at the time it was signed. With other players, like Garrett, surpassing his earnings, Watt is aiming for a deal that reflects his value and contributions to the team.
