J.J. Watt’s Touching Return to Houston with Family
HOUSTON, Texas — J.J. Watt, the former Houston Texans star, had a memorable return to NRG Stadium on Sunday. Before announcing the Texans versus Jaguars game for CBS Sports, he shared a special moment on the field with his 3-year-old son, Koa, and his wife, Kealia.
“It was the best,” Watt said. “This was such a cool morning for me to have my wife and son out on the field. Obviously, so many memories in this building, so many great throwbacks, and to see him run into that end zone, the same one I’ve run into before, just an unbelievable feeling this morning.”
Watt was drafted by the Texans with the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft out of Wisconsin. Over his ten seasons in Houston, he achieved great success, earning the NFL Defensive Player of the Year title three times and First-team All-Pro honors five times.
Despite his impressive career, Watt faced challenges towards the end of his time in the NFL. After requesting his release from the Texans following the 2020 season, he signed a two-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals. During this time, he dealt with a shoulder injury that required surgery in 2021 and later experienced atrial fibrillation, a heart condition that needed medical intervention.
After retiring last season, he transitioned to a broadcasting role, making his debut in the announcer’s booth with Ian Eagle this year. Additionally, Watt and Kealia welcomed their second child, Niko Benjamin, in June 2023. Koa was born in October 2022.
Watt’s return to NRG Stadium symbolized more than just nostalgia; it illustrated the connection he has maintained with the Texans and the Houston community. The moment was a heartfelt reminder of his legacy, bridging the past and the future as he now shares his love for the game with his son.
The Texans ultimately secured a dramatic 36-29 victory in a game highlighted by a 19-point comeback, showcasing the team’s resilience as J.J. Watt announced from the booth.
