West Virginia Stuns No. 2 Iowa State, Ends 12-Game Win Streak
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Javon Small scored 12 of his 27 points in the final two minutes to lead West Virginia to a 64-57 victory over No. 2 Iowa State on Saturday night, ending the Cyclones‘ national-best 12-game winning streak. The Mountaineers (13-4, 4-2 Big 12) secured their fourth win over a ranked team this season in front of a raucous home crowd.
West Virginia fans stormed the court after the game, joining players in singing John Denver‘s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” as the school celebrated Jerry West Day, honoring the late NBA legend who passed away in June at age 86. “We got the win for Jerry,” Small said. “We threw the throwback jerseys on. Yeah, it was Jerry West Day.”
Iowa State (15-2, 5-1 Big 12) was led by Tamin Lipsey‘s 18 points, but the Cyclones struggled offensively, scoring just 14 points in the final 7:35. The team committed 14 turnovers, attempted only seven free throws, and was held to 1-of-17 shooting from three-point range. West Virginia’s physical defense limited Iowa State to its lowest point total of the season, 28 points below its average.
Mountaineers coach Darian DeVries praised Small’s performance, calling him “the best guard in the country” and “something special.” Small shot 56% from the field and was instrumental in West Virginia’s defensive effort, which included holding Iowa State to just four assists.
The victory marked West Virginia’s third win over a top-10 team this season, solidifying their position as a contender in the Big 12. Meanwhile, Iowa State suffered its first conference loss of the season, despite three players scoring in double figures.
