White Sox Reinstate Outfielders, Option First Basemen to Triple-A

CHICAGO, IL – The Chicago White Sox announced today that outfielders have been reinstated from the injured list. In corresponding moves, first basemen Andrew Vaughn and Tim Elko have been optioned to Triple-A Charlotte.
Vaughn’s trip to the minors is not surprising, as his performance has declined sharply in 2025. He currently has a batting average of .189, with an on-base percentage of .218 and a slugging percentage of .314. Despite hitting five home runs, Vaughn’s metrics indicate he has struggled at the plate.
Once seen as a potential star after being drafted third overall in 2019, Vaughn has not met expectations. He signed with the White Sox for a bonus of $7.2212 million, but his batting averages have remained below par and his walk rate is notably low at just 3.6% this season.
Vaughn’s struggles contrast sharply with his college career, where he hit 50 home runs in 160 games for California. Over his professional career, he has shown flashes of power but has not sustained consistent performances, finishing between 15 to 21 home runs in previous seasons.
In a previous four-year span, Vaughn had a wRC+ of 102, indicating he was only slightly better than league average. However, his lack of speed on the base paths and subpar defensive metrics have raised concerns about his overall value.
Meanwhile, Elko, who was recently called up, has also been optioned down despite showing potential. Some fans expressed confusion about the decision to demote both players, especially considering the lack of evaluation given to Elko in the major leagues.
As both players head to the minors, the White Sox face critical roster decisions with impending returns of veteran outfielders Mike Tauchman and Andrew Benintendi from injury. The team hopes to improve its performance following a devastating 121-loss season.
Chicago’s management has expressed optimism that Vaughn will eventually find his footing and that changes to the roster could help foster a more competitive squad. The ongoing developments in player management remain crucial as the White Sox aim for better outcomes this season.
