Will Tommy Norris Survive the Oil Patch in ‘Landman’ Season 2?
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The first season of Taylor Sheridan‘s oil industry drama Landman left fans on the edge of their seats, with protagonist Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) facing a mountain of challenges. As Paramount+ remains tight-lipped about a Season 2 renewal, speculation swirls around the fate of the show’s flawed hero and the unresolved storylines.
In the Season 1 finale, Tommy inherits the presidency of M-Tex Oil after the sudden death of his boss, Monty Miller (Jon Hamm), from a heart attack. The role thrusts Tommy into high-stakes negotiations for an exploratory drilling deal that could bankrupt the company. Complicating matters, he must navigate a tense partnership with Rebecca (Ali Larter), an attorney he distrusts, while managing a dangerous alliance with a drug cartel led by Gallino (Andy Garcia).
Tommy’s personal life is equally chaotic. His ex-wife Angela (Demi Moore) remains a constant presence, his daughter Ainsley (Kayla Wallace) is a handful, and his son Cooper (Jacob Lofland) is entangled in a perilous relationship with Ariana (Paula Malcomson), the widow of a deceased oil field worker. With so much at stake, fans are eager to see how Tommy will handle the mounting pressure.
While Paramount+ has yet to officially renew Landman, the show’s success suggests a second season is likely. The series has become one of the streaming platform’s most-watched programs, and Sheridan’s track record of renewals for his other shows, such as Yellowstone and Lioness, bodes well for Landman.
Jon Hamm, who played Monty Miller, confirmed his character’s death in post-finale interviews. “You don’t come back from that,” Hamm told The Hollywood Reporter. “He’s no longer with us.” Hamm also hinted that Demi Moore’s character, Cami, will play a more significant role in Season 2, as she grapples with the fallout of Monty’s death and the impact on her family.
Landman is based on the podcast Boomtown, hosted by journalist Christian Wallace, who co-created the series with Sheridan. Wallace, a former roughneck and Texas Monthly editor, aimed to balance authenticity with dramatic storytelling. “Some of Landman is very accurate about what it’s like to work in the oil and gas industry,” Wallace said. “Other elements were embellished for the sake of drama and creating compelling characters.”
If Season 2 moves forward, production could begin as early as 2025, with a potential release in late 2025 or early 2026. Fans can expect the return of most Season 1 cast members, including Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, and Ali Larter, as the series delves deeper into the treacherous world of oil and gas.
For now, Landman Season 1 is available to stream on Paramount+, alongside Sheridan’s other hit series like Yellowstone, 1883, and 1923.
