Willy Adames Reflects on Brewers Departure and New Giants Contract

SAN FRANCISCO — Willy Adames, the former Milwaukee Brewers shortstop, shared his thoughts on his departure from the team and his new chapter with the San Francisco Giants. Speaking on April 21 from Oracle Park before facing the Brewers, Adames expressed satisfaction with how the team has continued to perform without him.
“That’s the Brewers way. They always find a way to do it,” Adames said. “They’re always going to find a way to win games. That’s how they do it every year. Nobody expects them to win and they always win. That’s how they do it. Somehow.”
Adames’ exit from Milwaukee came after he signed a seven-year, $182 million deal with the Giants, a move he expected given the circumstances surrounding his free agency. He noted that the team did not show interest in retaining him, which contributed to his decision to sign elsewhere.
“They didn’t even call,” he said when asked when he realized he wasn’t returning to Milwaukee. “Since I started talking to teams, I knew it was going to be somewhere else because they didn’t show any interest.”
Adames’ situation became more apparent as the Brewers made moves in the previous season, including trading star players Josh Hader and Corbin Burnes. Reflecting on his hope for a call from the Brewers, he added, “At the end of the day, you kind of had an idea that it was not going to happen. It’s always shocking when you don’t even get a call.”
Brewers general manager Matt Arnold, who does not typically comment on contract negotiations, acknowledged the positive relationship he had with Adames. “We have a great relationship with Willy and his agent,” Arnold said. “Super thankful for the time that he spent with us, but I can’t get into specifics on our contract discussions.”
Despite the lack of communication, Adames reflected fondly on his experiences with the Brewers. “A lot of great memories, obviously,” he said. “The city, the organization helped me to become the player that I am today.” His remarks illustrate a complex relationship with the team, filled with cherished moments and unanswered questions.
