Wind Shakes Up Peloton at Gent-Wevelgem Race Today

WEVELGEM, Belgium — As the iconic Gent-Wevelgem race unfolds, strong winds are causing significant disruptions in the peloton as it navigates the Moeren region. Riders experienced fragmented groupings as they tackled the challenging course on March 30, 2025.
Renaat Schotte, a well-known cycling analyst, reported, “And of course there is fragmentation! It’s particularly complex. The situation worsened after the Moeren, with the peloton dividing into five groups.” Notably, Lidl-Trek set the pace, creating breakaways that split the field significantly, with competitors like Mads Pedersen at the forefront.
Despite initial turmoil, a regrouping occurred with 117 kilometers to go, bringing some riders back together. Although the weather conditions were described as ideal by analyst Sep Vanmarcke, who noted, “30 km/h and the wind at our backs create perfect circumstances,” the race’s dynamics shifted drastically towards the end.
Gent-Wevelgem, once predominantly a sprint race, is shaken up as it approaches its first mass sprint since 2019. Two days after the E3 Saxo Classic, the stakes are high as riders battle for dominance among the rolling Flemish hills. Mads Pedersen is considered a top contender, potentially aiming for a record-equalling third victory.
This year, the star-studded lineup at Lidl-Trek offers more than just Pedersen. Their depth could play a crucial role in strategy against rivals, especially given that their competitors, including UAE and other notable teams, are also in a strong position.
As for prominent cyclist Wout van Aert, his absence has sparked discussions among analysts regarding its impact on the race. Greg Van Avermaet remarked, “Gent-Wevelgem was a perfect opportunity for him to fine-tune his form,” while Sep Vanmarcke emphasized that such major races should ideally be included in a cyclist’s schedule for optimal preparation.
Analysts suggest that Van Aert’s decision to sit this one out is strategic, based on a combination of physical data and personal assessment. Van Avermaet maintains confidence in Van Aert’s abilities, even amidst concerns about his recent performance.
With race day still unfolding, cycling fans are eager to see how the remaining laps will play out amid fierce competition and unpredictable weather conditions.
