Winnipeg Jets Soar to the Top of Central Division, Leafs Struggle
The Winnipeg Jets have exceeded expectations and claimed the top spot in the Central Division in the NHL. With their impressive 18-3-2 run since December, the Jets have emerged as a strong contender for the Presidents’ Trophy. Only the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks hold a better points percentage than the Jets.
The Jets’ success is no fluke. They possess a talented roster with depth up front and play a structured game. Connor Hellebuyck, one of the league’s best goaltenders, has been performing at an exceptional level. The team also boasts clinical finishers and playmakers like Kyle Connor, Nikolaj Ehlers, and Mark Scheifele.
On the other hand, the Toronto Maple Leafs, initially considered Stanley Cup favorites, have struggled throughout the season. Their defensive numbers have been lackluster, and the team lacks scoring depth. Additionally, the Leafs have faced goaltending issues ever since Joseph Woll‘s injury.
Auston Matthews has carried the Leafs with his remarkable performances, but there is a real possibility of Toronto missing the playoffs this year. The team heavily relies on capitalizing on opponents’ mistakes, which is unlikely against the disciplined Jets.
While it may be wise to sell high on the Jets at some point, this is not the time.
