Winter Storm Dumps Up to 8 Inches of Snow Across New England
BOSTON, Mass. — A winter storm swept through Massachusetts on Sunday, blanketing parts of New England with up to 8 inches of snow. The storm, which continued into early Monday morning, brought measurable snowfall across the Bay State, with the National Weather Service reporting varying totals from less than an inch in coastal areas to significant accumulations inland.
As of 6:45 a.m. Monday, light snow was still falling in some areas, though forecasters predicted the precipitation would taper off by daybreak. Ashfield, a town in Franklin County, recorded the highest snowfall total at 8 inches, while Barnstable County saw minimal accumulation, with East Falmouth reporting just 0.8 inches.
Other notable snowfall totals included 6.8 inches in Grafton, 6.3 inches in Randolph, and 5.2 inches in Haverhill. Coastal communities like Falmouth and Brewster saw less than an inch of snow, highlighting the storm’s uneven impact across the region.
“This storm brought a classic New England snowfall pattern, with higher totals in the western and central parts of the state and lighter amounts along the coast,” said a National Weather Service spokesperson. “Residents should remain cautious as temperatures drop and roads may remain slick.”
In Boston, 4.5 inches of snow accumulated, causing minor disruptions to morning commutes. Public works crews were out in force overnight, treating roads and clearing major thoroughfares. “We’ve been working around the clock to keep the roads safe,” said a city official. “We urge drivers to take it slow and allow extra time for travel.”
The storm also affected neighboring states, with parts of Connecticut and Rhode Island reporting significant snowfall. Simsbury, Connecticut, recorded 5 inches, while Coventry, Rhode Island, saw 4.2 inches.
Residents across the region took to social media to share photos of snow-covered landscapes and winter activities. “It’s a winter wonderland out there,” one Twitter user posted alongside a photo of a snow-covered backyard in Worcester, which received 4.4 inches.
Forecasters are now turning their attention to the next weather system, which could bring more snow later in the week. “We’re monitoring the potential for another storm, but it’s too early to say how much snow it might bring,” the National Weather Service spokesperson added.
