Winter Storm Warning Issued for Central Virginia, Up to 10 Inches of Snow Expected
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A winter storm warning has been issued for central Virginia, with up to 10 inches of snow expected in some areas from Sunday night through Monday evening. The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts moderate to heavy snowfall, sleet, and freezing rain, creating hazardous travel conditions and potential power outages.
The storm is expected to begin Sunday evening, with snow spreading across the region from southwest to northeast. Cold ground temperatures will prevent initial melting, leading to rapid accumulation. By late overnight into Monday morning, the snow is likely to mix with sleet and freezing rain, particularly south of Interstate 64. A brief break in precipitation is expected late Monday morning before additional snow arrives in the afternoon.
Central Virginia is forecast to receive 4 to 6 inches of snow and sleet, while the Shenandoah Valley could see 4 to 8 inches. Higher accumulations, potentially exceeding 8 to 10 inches, are expected in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Areas south of the James River may receive 1 to 4 inches of snow.
