Wisconsin Badgers Secure Commitment from Four-Star QB Ryan Hopkins

MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin football program has landed a significant commitment for its 2026 recruiting class, as four-star quarterback Ryan Hopkins of Mater Dei High School announced his decision on Sunday night. The Southern California native chose Wisconsin over Missouri and several other prominent programs.
Hopkins has been a primary target for the Badgers since October, when the staff initially offered him a scholarship. He recently visited Wisconsin for an unofficial tour, which likely influenced his decision. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound quarterback also held offers from Washington, Utah, Kentucky, and Arizona, among others.
“They really are building this offense off more run style, and I feel like that’s definitely Wisconsin,” Hopkins told BadgerExtra in January. “They get these big offensive linemen and these fast, big running backs. And I feel like I can make throws and just make a play with my feet as well.”
Hopkins is the fifth commitment in Wisconsin’s 2026 recruiting class, joining cornerback Carsen Eloms, defensive lineman Carmelow Reed, wide receiver Tayshon Bardo, and offensive lineman Benjamin Novak. His commitment marks Wisconsin’s second quarterback commitment in the cycle, with three-star Travis Burgess also in contention.
Rated as a four-star recruit by Rivals and a three-star prospect by 247Sports Composite and On3, Hopkins has established himself as a promising talent. He is noted for his strong throwing ability as well as his athleticism, having recently clocked a 10.66-second 100-meter dash.
The Badgers’ new offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes and quarterbacks coach Kenny Guiton have shifted their recruiting strategy, aiming to find quarterbacks more suited for a run-first offense. With his skills and adaptability, Hopkins seems well-positioned to contribute to the team’s evolving offensive scheme.
The commitment from Hopkins comes at a time when Wisconsin’s recruiting efforts have gained momentum. After a slow start to the recruiting cycle, the program has seen an uptick in commitments, highlighting the effectiveness of the coaching staff under head coach Luke Fickell‘s leadership.
Hopkins’ transition to Mater Dei, a renowned football powerhouse, will also allow him to showcase his abilities against top-tier competition in preparation for his future at the collegiate level.
As the 2026 recruiting class continues to take shape, Hopkins’ commitment underscores the Badgers’ ambition to build a versatile and dynamic team capable of competing at the highest level in college football.
