Wisconsin Badgers Secure Nick Boyd from Transfer Portal

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball team has officially welcomed Nick Boyd, a guard transferred from San Diego State University, to their roster.
Boyd, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound senior, made his commitment on Monday after visiting Wisconsin late last week. The addition of Boyd significantly strengthens the Badgers’ backcourt, where he will partner with sophomore guard John Blackwell as projected starters.
During his time at San Diego State, Boyd had an impressive season, averaging 13.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game while maintaining a shooting accuracy of 41.1 percent from the field and 35.1 percent from three-point range. Previously, Boyd was a key player for Florida Atlantic University during their historic Final Four run in the 2022-23 season.
“Nick brings a wealth of experience to our team,” said Badgers head coach Greg Gard. “His ability to perform under pressure, combined with his scoring ability, makes him an incredible asset for us this season.”
The Badgers have been active in the transfer portal, securing three commitments, including Boyd, wing Andrew Rohde, and forward Austin Rapp from Portland. Both Boyd and Rohde will be entering their final year of eligibility, while Rapp has three years remaining.
Wisconsin’s roster now features the following players for the 2025-26 season:
- Guards: Nick Boyd, John Blackwell, Jack Janicki, Andrew Rohde, Jack Robison, Zach Kinziger, Hayden Jones
- Forwards: Nolan Winter, Austin Rapp, Xavier Amos, Riccardo Greppi, Will Garlock
The Badgers sought experience following the departures of seven players, including graduate guard John Tonje and other key contributors, who helped the team reach the NCAA Tournament’s Round of 32 last season.
Boyd’s recruitment drew interest from several schools, but his recent visit to Wisconsin left a favorable impression. The New York native’s successful past with Florida Atlantic, culminating in back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, adds valuable experience to Wisconsin’s roster.
While at Florida Atlantic, Boyd averaged 8.9 points and 2.4 assists during the Owls’ 35-win season, playing a prominent role in their remarkable run to the Final Four. The Badgers hope his winning experience translates well into a team looking to rebound from last year’s disappointing finish.
“I’m excited to join a program with a rich history and contribute to building something special,” Boyd said upon his commitment. “Wisconsin has always been a program that values teamwork and winning.”
With Boyd now part of the lineup, Wisconsin is in a strong position as they gear up for the upcoming season. Two spots remain open on their anticipated 15-man roster, as they continue to explore additional transfer opportunities to enhance the team further.
