MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Wisconsin men’s basketball star John Tonje has been awarded Big Ten Player of the Week for the third time this season following his impressive 32-point performance in the Badgers’ 94-84 win over Purdue on Saturday.

With this victory, Wisconsin climbed to No. 11 in the AP Poll and remains the top-ranked team in the Big Ten, holding the No. 9 position in KenPom rankings. Tonje, who leads the Badgers with an average of 19.2 points per game, displayed his ability to shine during crucial matchups, scoring 22 points in the second half alone against Purdue.

Tonje’s efficiency was evident as he shot 10 of 15 from the field, including four three-pointers and hitting eight out of nine attempts from the free-throw line. This season, he is the only player in the nation to have recorded multiple 30-point games against top 10 opponents, previously posting 41 points against then-No. 9 ranked Arizona in November.

“I think we’re better holistically on both ends of the floor,” said Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard when addressing the team’s growth since their last matchup against Illinois, where the Badgers lost 86-80 in December. “It’s going to be a challenge for us and a good measuring stick to see how we’ve improved.”

This week, the Badgers will be hosting the Illinois Fighting Illini on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Kohl Center, before facing further challenges ahead. Coach Gard believes that maintaining their focus will be crucial for Wisconsin’s success, especially as they aim to extend their current four-game win streak.

The Badgers’ upcoming opponents are positioned to test the team’s mettle as they approach the end of the season. Tonje’s recent play will be pivotal in their quest to peak at the right moment, as they prepare for potential postseason play.

“I just try to stay focused on the game, knowing that every night is a new challenge. We have to keep pushing ourselves,” Tonje stated after the game. His consistent performance has not only earned him accolades but has also played a significant role in elevating Wisconsin’s status in the conference.
