WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Wizards have just wrapped up a dismal NBA season, achieving the second-worst winning percentage in franchise history at 22.0%. This only surpassed the team’s 18.3% from the 2023-24 season. Additionally, the Wizards recorded the lowest scoring margin in team history, marking a historic year of struggles.

Despite their challenges, the team displayed some resilience, winning a few games late in the season that kept them out of contention for the title of worst-ever squad based on winning percentage, ultimately finishing as the 54th worst team overall.

The Wizards’ general manager, Will Dawkins, spoke optimistically about the future, highlighting the team’s younger talent. Coach Brian Keefe gave ample opportunities to youth players, with three rookies—Bub Carrington, Alex Sarr, and Kyshawn George—each logging over 1,800 minutes, a feat not seen in two decades.

“This offseason is critical,” Dawkins stated, challenging players to improve during the 170 days before training camp. “We have the potential to become a contending team, but it requires hard work and dedication.”

Several young players showed promise, albeit with room for improvement. Carrington, 19, led the team in minutes played while 25-year-old Jordan Poole had the second-best PPA among the squad. However, despite these strides, the team was ranked last in offensive efficiency.

Moreover, the Wizards made history as the first team to have three rookies hit over 100 three-point field goals, although this was seen as less significant due to the higher volume of attempts in today’s game. Dawkins noted that the team’s defensive metrics, such as contesting shots, showed slight improvement despite finishing 27th in defensive rating.

Going forward, the Wizards are looking to bolster their roster through the draft, aiming to add players who can contribute long-term. Dawkins emphasized the importance of the upcoming draft in transforming the team’s fortunes.

As the Wizards enter what they hope will be a pivotal offseason, the next steps will determine if they can pivot from being one of the league’s weakest teams to a strong contender in the years to come.
