Wizards, Suns Nearing Trade Deal for Valanciunas and Nurkic
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Washington Wizards and Phoenix Suns are reportedly close to finalizing a trade that would send center Jonas Valanciunas to Phoenix in exchange for Jusuf Nurkic and a first-round draft pick. The deal, first reported by Steve Bulpett of Heavy Sports on Tuesday, could be completed within days as both teams look to reshape their rosters ahead of the NBA trade deadline.
Valanciunas, a 32-year-old Lithuanian center, has been a key contributor for the Wizards this season, averaging 11.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in just 20 minutes per game. Despite coming off the bench, his efficiency and veteran presence have made him a valuable asset for Washington, which currently holds the worst record in the Eastern Conference at 8-41.
“JV brings size, rebounding, and veteran experience, which could be valuable for the Suns,” Bulpett noted in his report. The Suns, sitting ninth in the Western Conference with a 25-24 record, are seeking more consistency in their frontcourt. Nurkic, who joined Phoenix last season, has averaged 8.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game but has struggled to provide the stability the team needs.
In addition to the Valanciunas-Nurkic trade, rumors have surfaced that the Wizards are also in talks with the Milwaukee Bucks to acquire Khris Middleton in exchange for Kyle Kuzma. These moves suggest Washington is positioning itself for a rebuild, while Phoenix aims to bolster its roster for a playoff push.
As the trade deadline approaches, both teams are under pressure to finalize deals that could significantly impact their seasons. Fans and analysts alike are closely watching how these potential trades unfold, with many speculating on the ripple effects across the league.
