WNBA Negotiations Highlight Tensions with Commissioner Engelbert

STAMFORD, Conn. – NBA Commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that the WNBA will reach a new collective bargaining agreement with players but acknowledged that relationship issues with Commissioner Cathy Engelbert need attention. Recent criticisms from players have highlighted tensions within the league.
Last week, Minnesota Lynx player Napheesa Collier publicly criticized the WNBA leadership, stating that the league has the “worst leadership in the world.” This statement came just before the WNBA Finals between Las Vegas and Phoenix. Silver expressed disappointment over these comments, emphasizing that they coincide with the league’s most important games.
“There’s no question that the WNBA is going through growing pains, and it’s unfortunate that it’s coming just as their most important games are on right now,” Silver said during a press conference. He stated that the league has seen fantastic games and expressed hope for a successful negotiation soon.
Engelbert shares Silver’s sentiment about the need for a new deal but indicated it might not be finalized by the October 31 deadline. Negotiators from the league and players’ association are expected to meet soon to address the players’ demands.
Players want significant changes following the recent growth of the WNBA. Silver noted the underlying issues extend beyond economic concerns, and that there are relationship problems that need to be resolved. He expressed confidence in fixing these issues over time.
Derek Fisher, former Lakers guard and NBPA president during a previous labor dispute, commented on the situation. He acknowledged Collier’s outspoken criticism during negotiations, explaining that such feelings are not uncommon in a high-stakes environment.
“Whenever you’re in the heat of high-stakes negotiations, it reaches a level of distrust,” Fisher said. He highlighted the importance of ultimately finding common ground to move forward.
Silver reiterated, “We will get a deal done with the players.” He acknowledged that while it may be challenging, the goal is to strengthen the ties between the league’s management and its players.
As the WNBA navigates these turbulent negotiations, fans remain hopeful for a resolution to avoid potential disruptions before the 2026 season.
