MIAMI, Fla. — Connecticut Sun guard DiJonai Carrington stirred controversy Friday night when she arrived at Wayfair Arena in Miami wearing a hoodie featuring rapper YG‘s 2016 tour slogan, “The F—Donald Trump Tour.” The outfit, emblazoned with bold red lettering and an image of YG flipping the middle finger, drew immediate attention as Carrington posed for photos before her Unrivaled league game.

Carrington, who plays for the Mist in the 3-on-3 Unrivaled league co-founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, has been vocal about her political views. Her X (formerly Twitter) account has previously shown support for Vice President Kamala Harris, and her choice of attire further emphasized her stance.

The 2024 WNBA Most Improved Player, Carrington has been a standout performer this season, averaging career highs of 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.6 assists. However, her season has not been without controversy. Earlier this year, she was accused of intentionally poking Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark in the eye during a playoff game. Carrington denied the allegations, stating, “I don’t even know why I would intend to hit anybody in the eye. That doesn’t even make sense to me.”

Carrington’s relationship with Fever fans has been strained since August, when she tweeted, “the Indiana Fever have the nastiest fans in the W. ew.” The tweet came after a heated playoff series between the Sun and the Fever, during which Carrington’s girlfriend, NaLyssa Smith, played alongside Clark for Indiana.

Carrington’s latest controversy comes as she continues to make headlines both on and off the court. Her pre-game outfit choice has reignited debates about athletes’ political expressions and their impact on public perception. The Unrivaled league, which aims to provide a platform for women’s basketball, has yet to comment on the incident.

As Carrington prepares for the remainder of the Unrivaled season, her actions remain under scrutiny. Whether this latest controversy will affect her career or the league’s reputation remains to be seen.
