Wojciech Szczesny Announces Retirement from Professional Football
Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34.
In an emotional post shared on Instagram, Szczesny expressed that after an illustrious 18-year career, he feels that his heart is no longer in the sport.
Szczesny began his career as a youth player at Arsenal, having moved to London at the age of 16. He made his senior debut for the club in September 2009.
After a loan spell at Brentford, Szczesny secured a regular position as the starting goalkeeper for Arsenal, where he played for four seasons before moving to Roma on loan.
He concluded his career with a successful seven-year tenure at Juventus, where he won three Serie A titles, three Italian Cups, and two Italian Super Cups before his contract was terminated mutually earlier this month.
Szczesny has earned 84 caps for the Polish national team, describing his career as a “journey of a lifetime.”
Reflecting on his journey, Szczesny stated, “I left Warsaw, my hometown in June of 2006 to join Arsenal with one dream – to make a living out of football.”
He further expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had, stating that he had not only realized his dreams but had experiences beyond his imagination, playing with some of the greatest players in history.
Despite feeling physically ready for challenges, Szczesny acknowledged that his heart is not in the game anymore, leading him to devote his attention to his family, including his wife Marina and their two children, Liam and Noelia.
In his farewell message, Szczesny extended gratitude to the fans, acknowledging their significant role in his journey by stating, “Without you, none of this would make any sense!”
