SAN FRANCISCO — Adrian Wojnarowski, renowned for his groundbreaking NBA coverage, received the Curt Gowdy Media Award on February 14, 2025, during NBA All-Star Weekend festivities. The honor recognizes his significant contributions to sports journalism and his ability to break news ahead of competitors.
“I only had ever hoped to have a career as a sportswriter, and so to me this honor is reflective of all the people who believed in me, gave me opportunities, helped me along this road,” Wojnarowski said shortly after the announcement. He also expressed gratitude for being placed among his idols, such as Jackie MacMullan and Michael Wilbon, who have previously won the award.
Wojnarowski’s career began in Connecticut, where he reported on the University of Connecticut. He gained wider recognition in 2007 after joining Yahoo! Sports, crafting a reputation for his detailed columns and groundbreaking reporting that led to the coined term ‘Woj Bombs’ for his timely scoops. He transitioned to ESPN in 2017, further elevating his status within the industry.
Throughout his career, Wojnarowski was known for his speed and accuracy, especially with the rise of social media. “I came along at a unique time in media, and I was the beneficiary of good timing and incredible support from people I worked with at the NBA, ESPN, and Yahoo,” he reflected.
In September 2024, Wojnarowski surprised the sports world by announcing his retirement from journalism to serve as general manager for the men’s basketball team at St. Bonaventure University, his alma mater.
He was one of four recipients of the Curt Gowdy Media Award, alongside Michelle Smith, who won the print media award for her extensive coverage of women’s sports, particularly basketball; and Clark Kellogg and George Blaha, who shared the electronic media award for their contributions to college basketball broadcasting.
Michelle Smith praised women’s basketball and expressed hope for the ongoing growth of its visibility. “It’s a vital step for women’s sports coverage, and I’m thankful to be recognized for the work we’ve all done,” she said.
Kellogg, a CBS college basketball analyst recognized since 1993, reflected on his career and the joy of covering March Madness. Blaha, who has called Detroit Pistons games since 1976, highlighted the importance of building relationships in sports broadcasting.
Additionally, Jeff Twiss, Vice President of Media Relations for the Boston Celtics, received the John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award, acknowledging his contributions since joining the franchise in 1981.
The Gowdy award winners will be honored at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement Weekend on September 5-6, honoring their lasting legacies in the basketball community.
