Wolves Vs Southampton Football Match Highlights

Southampton, England – Jørgen Strand Larsen scored two goals as Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s Stadium, moving nine points clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone on March 15, 2025.

Wolves aimed for only their third league win of the season and started cautiously. However, in their first attacking moment, Strand Larsen headed in the opening goal, beating Saints goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. The home side struggled to respond effectively, and chances were sparse in the first half.

Strand Larsen extended Wolves’ lead shortly after halftime, striking a low shot into the bottom corner, prompting some Southampton fans to exit the stadium early. Paul Onuachu, who was substituted in the second half, pulled one back for Southampton after Tyler Dibling’s shot hit the post, but Wolves managed to hold on for the crucial victory.

This defeat marked a significant milestone for Southampton, making them only the fourth team in Premier League history to suffer nine consecutive home losses in a single season. They remain at the bottom of the table with just nine points, trailing the league’s all-time low record of 11 set by Derby County.

Wolves, under manager Vítor Pereira, have turned their fortunes around recently, collecting 10 points from their last six matches after a series of four consecutive losses in January. Strand Larsen’s goals brought his total to eight for the season, signaling a return to form for the striker.

Despite their two-goal cushion, Wolves had opportunities to increase their lead, including an unmarked chance for João Gomes that missed the target. The late-game pressure intensified following Onuachu’s goal, leaving Wolves supporters apprehensive until the final whistle sounded, bringing cheers of relief.

The victory marks Wolves’ seventh consecutive win against Southampton in Premier League matches, reflecting their dominance in this fixture. Moving up the standings, Wolves are now positioned 17th, significantly improving from their standing just a month ago. With 26 points, they have built a solid cushion over the relegation spots, allowing Pereira’s squad to gain confidence going forward.

As for Southampton, their ongoing struggle raises serious concerns about their survival in the Premier League, and they will need to significantly improve their performance in the remaining matches of the season.
