Wrestling Icon Jim Ross Announces Colon Cancer Diagnosis

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma — Legendary wrestling commentator Jim Ross announced on Thursday that he has been diagnosed with colon cancer. Ross, 73, shared the news on his Twitter account, stating, “Diagnosed this week with colon cancer. Surgery being scheduled in the next week or two. I appreciate your concern and support.”
This is not Ross’s first battle with cancer. In October 2021, he revealed a diagnosis of skin cancer but declared himself cancer-free by December that same year after completing treatment. In February 2024, Ross underwent surgery related to cancer on his right hip.
Known as a prominent voice in the wrestling world, Ross rose to fame as a play-by-play announcer for various promotions since the 1970s, starting with Mid-South Wrestling. He later spent time with the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and World Championship Wrestling (WCW), but he is best known for his long tenure with the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE).
During his time with WWE, Ross worked with notable personalities like Jerry “The King” Lawler and played a critical role in what fans refer to as the Attitude Era, during which stars like “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson became mainstream sensations. Ross was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007.
In 2019, Ross joined the newly formed All Elite Wrestling (AEW), where he continues to contribute as a commentator. He also hosts the podcast “Grilling JR” with Conrad Thompson.
Ross last appeared on AEW programming during the AEW Dynasty pay-per-view in April, where he called the opening match. There is currently no indication of how long he will be away from the ring or the exact date of his surgery. Ross’s fans and colleagues have expressed their support and best wishes as he navigates this new health challenge.
