Wrexham Claims Late Victory Over Wycombe in Thrilling League One Clash

ADAMS PARK, UK — Sam Smith scored a dramatic late winner as Wrexham defeated Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 in a closely contested League One match Saturday. The victory moved Wrexham into second place, three points clear of Wycombe.
The match was delayed for more than 30 minutes in the second half due to a medical emergency in the crowd, but both teams returned to the field and completed the game. Smith’s goal came in the 82nd minute after a header from Steven Fletcher fell into his path, and his deflected strike beat goalkeeper Will Norris.
Both teams had their chances throughout the match. Wycombe’s Fred Onyedinma and Daniel Udoh tested Wrexham’s goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo early on, while Jay Rodriguez‘s header was comfortably saved. The first half ended without goals, with Onyedinma missing a chance from the edge of the box just before half-time.
Wrexham’s strongest chance before scoring came in the 57th minute, when Smith intercepted a misguided defensive header, only to see his shot hit the post. Referee Ben Speedie waved away two penalty appeals in quick succession, frustrating players and fans alike.
In the 77th minute, play was halted for a medical incident involving a supporter in the away section. After a 35-minute stoppage, the fan was reported to be in stable condition. Following the interruption, both teams returned to the pitch for a brief warm-up before resuming the match.
Despite pressure from Wycombe, including a near miss from James Berry that Okonkwo expertly saved, the hosts managed to hold on to their slim lead. Wrexham secured their first-ever Football League double over Wycombe, handing the Buckinghamshire side their second defeat in 17 home league matches.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance following a loss to Reading earlier in the week. “If you take the last six away games, we’ve won five of them, that’s an incredible return for us,” he said. “It was key that we’re not going to over-celebrate this because it’s just three points, but it’s a big win.”
Wycombe’s manager, Mike Dodds, was disappointed with the result and emphasized how crucial moments define matches. “I think it was one minute and 20 seconds from when they cleared the ball off the line to the ball being in the back of our net. That’s how brutal it can be at the top,” Dodds said.
