Wrexham Targets Veteran Tom Cairney for Championship Season

Wrexham, Wales – Wrexham FC is targeting experienced players, including Fulham midfielder Tom Cairney, as they prepare for their first season in the EFL Championship in 43 years. The move comes after the club’s remarkable rise, achieving four consecutive promotions since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took ownership in 2020.
Cairney, 34, a veteran of Championship football, has made over 350 appearances for Fulham, scoring 46 goals since joining in 2015. Reports indicate that Wrexham has already made an approach for the midfielder, who has seen his minutes reduced as he often comes off the bench.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson stated that the club is committed to exploring the market for higher-level players to ensure they’re competitive in the Championship. “We will be looking for players with experience who can help us navigate this new challenge,” Parkinson said.
Wrexham aims to bolster its squad without breaking the bank, likely focusing on free agents willing to accept competitive wages. Cairney fits this profile and could play a crucial role in Wrexham’s campaign. “With the right players, we can build on our recent success and aim for even greater heights,” the manager added.
Wrexham achieved their promotion after finishing second in the EFL League One standings, marking a historic period for the club. They are the first team to achieve back-to-back-to-back promotions in England’s top five divisions.
As the club looks to take its next step, the recruitment of players like Cairney will be pivotal for their ambition of reaching the Premier League.
