Wrexham and Wycombe Locked in Tight League One Promotion Race

WREXHAM, Wales — Wrexham AFC secured a crucial 1-0 victory against Rotherham United on March 8, moving level on points with second-placed Wycombe Wanderers in the League One standings.
Sam Smith starred for Wrexham, scoring the only goal of the match on his 27th birthday. The victory at the Stok Racecourse marked Wrexham’s first home win in the league since January 4 and provided a much-needed morale boost as they pursue promotion amid a fierce contest for the automatic spots.
Following a quiet first half, Wrexham opened the scoring just after the break. Smith capitalized on a cross from Jay Rodriguez, slotting it home to put the Dragons ahead. Wrexham dominated possession for much of the match, with Arthur Okonkwo making critical saves to preserve the lead.
“Rotherham makes it difficult for you; it’s a first-contact and second-balls game, and you’ve got to be ready to deal with that,” said Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson. “We defended long throws and corners well, and I thought we thoroughly deserved the win.”
The victory puts Wrexham on 68 points, equal with Wycombe, who drew with Peterborough United. Birmingham City leads the league, distancing themselves from the competition with a commanding lead.
Smith’s performance was especially significant given the context of his birthday. “I told my mum I’d get her a goal, so she’ll be delighted with that,” he said post-game. “It’s a special feeling to score on my birthday and one I won’t forget for a long time.”
Next up for Wrexham is a trip to Reading, where they hope to extend their winning streak and strengthen their promotion credentials. “We know what’s at stake, and we’re ready for the challenge ahead,” Parkinson concluded.
