LEVERKUSEN, Germany — Xabi Alonso has announced that April will be the “Month of Truth” for Bayer Leverkusen as his team gears up for a crucial title race against Bayern Munich. In a press conference on March 28, 2025, Alonso emphasized the importance of seizing the moment. “I have always said: In April, we clarify our goals. Now it’s about fighting for this opportunity. It’s not easy, but the will and desire are clear,” he stated.

Last season, Alonso delayed discussing the title race until April, but the context is different this year. Unlike in 2024, when Leverkusen clinched their first championship in franchise history by mid-April, they face a significant challenge this time and must launch a comeback.

With a win against Bayern Munich on Friday at 20:30 CET (DAZN), Leverkusen can reduce the gap to the league leaders to just three points. Alonso described the upcoming match as “super important,” emphasizing that it’s the moment where everything could be decided. “We want to apply as much pressure as possible,” he said. Alonso left open the question of his future with Leverkusen beyond this summer during the press conference.

April will not only see the title battle intensify but will also feature a critical DFB-Pokal semifinal against Arminia Bielefeld. Following that, Leverkusen faces four Bundesliga matches against Heidenheim, St. Pauli, and Augsburg, which Alonso described as the “key” to having a chance at the title. “The goal? We want Bayern to feel like they are not alone at the top. We aim to be a threat to them. We must win almost everything,” he declared.
