Xavier Vs St. John's Basketball Madison Square Garden

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Xavier University’s men’s basketball team looks to build on its recent upset victory over Marquette as it faces No. 20 St. John's in a critical Big East showdown Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden. The Musketeers, fresh off their first road win over a top-10 team in nearly four years, aim to avenge a 82-72 loss to the Red Storm earlier this month.

Xavier’s victory over Marquette significantly boosted its NCAA Tournament hopes, increasing its chances from 20% to 35.4%, according to analytics. However, the Musketeers face a formidable challenge in St. John’s, which boasts a perfect 12-0 home record this season and a five-game winning streak. “You can’t get too high on anything. Things are never as good or as bad as they seem,” said Xavier forward Zach Freemantle. “We just gotta stay even keeled. Enjoy the win but move onto the next game.”

The Red Storm dominated Xavier in their previous meeting, outrebounding the Musketeers 50-30, including 20 offensive rebounds that led to 22 second-chance points. Xavier head coach Sean Miller called the loss the team’s “low point” of the season. Since then, Xavier has won three straight games, including the upset over Marquette, to re-enter the Big East conversation.

St. John’s, led by head coach Rick Pitino, ranks No. 12 in offensive rebounding and plays at the fastest tempo in the Big East. The Red Storm’s RJ Luis Jr. has been a standout, averaging 22.2 points over the last five games. Meanwhile, Xavier has leaned on its defense, ranking No. 38 in defensive efficiency, according to KenPom. The Musketeers forced Marquette, the nation’s top offense in turnover percentage, into 13 turnovers in their recent win.

Xavier’s ability to contain St. John’s on the glass and limit turnovers will be crucial. The Red Storm’s Zuby Ejiofor, who had 18 points and 12 rebounds in the first meeting, remains a key threat. Xavier will also need improved perimeter shooting after going just 2-of-17 from three-point range against Marquette. St. John’s ranks No. 186 in defending three-point shots, presenting an opportunity for Xavier to exploit.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET at Madison Square Garden, with the game airing on FS1. Xavier holds a 17-8 all-time series lead, but St. John’s has won nine of its last 10 games overall. The Red Storm are favored by 3.5 points, with the over/under set at 149.5.
