Xpeng Reveals 2026 Robotaxi Lineup Amidst Tesla Competition
Guangzhou, China — Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng announced on November 5, 2025, three new robotaxi models set to launch in 2026 as part of its aim to join the competitive landscape against Tesla’s self-driving initiatives.
This announcement came during Xpeng’s AI Day event, highlighting the company’s commitment to advancing autonomous mobility technology. The upcoming robotaxis will utilize the company’s proprietary Turing smart-driving chip and Canghai AI platform, intended to achieve Level 4 autonomy with impressive computing power.
The new robotaxi concept, based on the X9 multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), was showcased in a preview video on Weibo. The video illustrated the vehicle’s capabilities, demonstrating how it interacts with pedestrians and displays information through screens positioned behind sun visors.
Xpeng’s previous G9 SUV received approval for public-road testing in Guangzhou back in 2022, indicating the company’s progress in the sector. In contrast, Tesla recently unveiled its Cybercab at an auto expo in Shanghai, but lacks permits to operate in China. Tesla is expected to initiate driverless robotaxi operations in Austin by the end of 2025, as stated by CEO Elon Musk.
Xpeng’s unveiling positions it as a significant player in the race for commercial Level 4 autonomy, particularly as the Chinese EV industry faces challenges from regulations and safety concerns, highlighted by recent vehicle fire incidents.
Analysts from UOB Kay Hian noted that stricter regulations may elevate safety standards for Chinese car brands like Xpeng while posing difficulties for smaller competitors such as Li Auto. They suggested these changes could enhance global consumer confidence in established manufacturers.
Amidst all this, Xpeng reported a bullish retail sentiment on Stocktwits, reflecting growing investor confidence. As Xpeng prepares for its future releases, the unfolding competition between Silicon Valley and Shenzhen in advanced mobility will likely continue to intensify.
