Yamaha V4 Motogp Engine Announcement

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. announced on November 16, 2025, that it will switch to a V4 engine for the upcoming 2026 MotoGP World Championship season. This decision marks a significant change after competing with its inline-four engine in 429 Grands Prix.

The new YZR-M1 machines will feature the V4 layout, aligning Yamaha with other manufacturers in the MotoGP field. Takahiro Sumi, General Manager of Yamaha Motor Sports Development Division, expressed pride in the inline-four engine’s legacy while emphasizing the need for evolution in racing technology.

“The inline-four has been at the heart of Yamaha’s philosophy for decades,” Sumi stated. “However, MotoGP is constantly evolving, and we must evolve with it. The V4 represents a new chapter for Yamaha.” He added that the switch aims to enhance motorcycle performance and provide riders the best possible tools to win.

Massimo Bartolini, Yamaha Factory Racing Technical Director, highlighted the extensive development process leading to this decision. “We analyzed every aspect of performance, from acceleration to cornering behavior, and concluded that the V4 offers the advantages we expected,” Bartolini noted.

The Valencia Grand Prix, taking place from November 14 to 16, 2025, is crucial for Yamaha as the team tests the new V4 engine under race conditions. During this event, Yamaha’s star rider Fabio Quartararo hopes to finalize development plans for the 2026 season.

“It’s an important weekend to decide the direction for this winter and next year,” Quartararo said. He aims to improve upon a good performance in the previous races and hopes to end the season on a high note.

Another significant aspect of the 2026 plans includes Yamaha’s alignment with the 2027 technical regulations, which will require a shift to 850cc engines. This strategic move positions Yamaha for future advancements in bike layout and aerodynamic development.
