Yankees Closer Out Four to Six Weeks with Hamstring Injury

New York, NY — The New York Yankees are set to face a significant setback as their closer will likely miss four to six weeks due to a hamstring injury, sources revealed to ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Monday.
The injury occurred during the Yankees’ recent three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays. The right-handed pitcher, who had logged an inning during Saturday’s lopsided 18-2 defeat, experienced discomfort while warming up to pitch the ninth inning on Sunday.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated that Weaver would undergo tests on Monday during the team’s off day. The Yankees are preparing to kick off a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday.
This season, Weaver has continued the impressive performance from his breakout 2024 campaign, boasting a 1.05 ERA and limiting opponents to a .412 OPS across 24 appearances. Initially serving as the primary setup man, Weaver took over the closer role from Williams in late April, successfully converting eight out of nine save opportunities.
In response to Weaver’s injury, the Yankees plan to place him on the injured list Tuesday. Fernando Cruz is expected to be activated from the injured list, while Williams will likely return to the closer role. The two-time All-Star has exhibited strong performance recently, not allowing a run in 11 of his last 13 outings, which has lowered his ERA from 11.25 to 6.23.
