Yankees Designate Carlos Carrasco for Assignment Amid Roster Changes

NEW YORK — The New York Yankees announced Tuesday that veteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco has been designated for assignment as part of a roster shakeup. In a corresponding move, the Yankees recalled reliever Yerry de los Santos from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Carrasco, 38, had signed a minor league contract with the Yankees in the offseason, but found himself on the Opening Day roster after injuries plagued the team’s rotation during spring training. He made six starts and two appearances in relief, posting a 5.91 ERA over 32 innings.
His last outing was on Sunday, where he allowed two runs on five hits across three innings. Despite his efforts, Carrasco struggled with consistency, leading the Yankees to make this tough decision.
De los Santos, 27, has shown promise at Triple-A, logging a 1.74 ERA over ten appearances this season. He made his Major League debut earlier this season, where he threw two scoreless innings in a doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Yankees have also updated their lineup regarding injured players. Infielder DJ LeMahieu has moved his rehab assignment from Double-A Somerset to Triple-A and could return for the upcoming weekend series against the Athletics. Right-hander Scott Effross has begun a rehab assignment at the rookie-level team.
This move comes as the Yankees have faced a series of injuries within their rotation, including losses of key pitchers Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil. With Thursday’s off day, the Yankees will have time to adjust their pitching staff, possibly rotating reliever Ryan Yarbrough into the starting role.
Carrasco’s future is uncertain, but he may attract interest from teams looking for a veteran pitcher capable of providing innings. Throughout his career, Carrasco has a 4.18 ERA across 16 Major League seasons, making him a respected figure among his peers despite recent struggles.
