Yankees Pirates April Game Highlights

PITTSBURGH — The New York Yankees delivered a commanding performance against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, securing a 10-4 victory at PNC Park. With this win, the Yankees achieved their third consecutive victory in the series and improved their season record to 6-2, while the Pirates dropped to a dismal 2-7.

The game showcased Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham, who shined with two home runs and four RBIs, increasing his season batting average to an impressive .471. ‘With the injuries we’re dealing with, it’s crucial for guys to step up,’ Grisham said. ‘I’m just trying to do my part.’ His contributions came as Cody Bellinger nursed a minor back issue, leaving Grisham to take over as a standout in the lineup.

The Yankees took the lead early when second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. scored on a single by Austin Wells in the second inning. They extended their lead in the third when Grisham homered over right field, marking the team’s 24th home run in just eight games — a new MLB record.

The Pirates did manage to come back in the fourth, with designated hitter Bryan Reynolds and center fielder Oneil Cruz both reaching base. An impactful double from third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes allowed Reynolds to score, ultimately giving Pittsburgh a brief 4-2 lead. However, their rally was short-lived as the Yankees responded with a series of runs of their own, culminating in a game-winning three-run homer from Grisham in the fifth inning.

Pittsburgh starting pitcher Bailey Falter struggled, giving up seven earned runs in just four innings. ‘I didn’t have my best stuff today, and it showed,’ Falter admitted. The Pirates’ bullpen fared little better, as they allowed the Yankees to pad their lead further in the eighth and ninth innings.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised Grisham’s performance, stating, ‘He’s been phenomenal for us. His versatility and ability to produce in clutch situations cannot be understated.’ Boone also experimented with veteran Paul Goldschmidt in the leadoff spot, where he went 3-for-5, further disrupting the Pirates’ defense.

The Yankees will look to secure a series sweep on Sunday, with rookie Will Warren taking the mound against veteran Andrew Heaney. ‘We’ve got to stay focused and build on this momentum,’ Warren said while preparing for the matchup. As for the Pirates, they face a challenging road ahead if they want to recover from their poor start to the season.

First pitch for the final game of the series is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. on April 6.
