Austin Wells New York Yankees Beard Superstition

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Austin Wells‘ beard is safe for now after the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 on Tuesday night, clinching the series victory. Wells had previously agreed with catching coach Tanner Swanson to only shave when the team lost a series.

“Hopefully, we don’t lose another series the rest of the year,” Wells said. The Yankees have not needed to shave often lately, winning seven straight series since a setback against the Tampa Bay Rays in early May.

The Yankees improved to 34-20, giving them the second-best record in the American League and placing them seven games ahead in the AL East. The Angels fell to 25-29.

Manager Aaron Boone praised the team’s performance, stating, “We’ve won some of these lower-scoring games now, too. It’s not like we’ve just blown teams out over and over.”

Starting pitcher Carlos Rodón dominated the Angels, striking out 10 batters over seven scoreless innings. The Yankees also received home runs from designated hitter Ben Rice and third baseman Oswald Peraza, while shortstop Anthony Volpe added an RBI single.

Devin Williams earned his first save in a month but faced challenges in the ninth inning, allowing a home run before closing out the game. A successful groundout from Jo Adell ended the Angels’ rally, securing the win for the Yankees.

Wells noted the advantages of having a beard for his catching duties, saying, “It helps my mask sit a little nicer on the chin.” The Yankees lifted their long-standing ban of facial hair prior to the 2025 season, allowing players like Wells to embrace their superstitions.

General manager Brian Cashman recalled how Wells had previously conformed to strict grooming rules. Now, Wells has been trimming his beard regularly, ensuring it stays neat while he enjoys his newfound freedom.

Swanson expressed that their beard pact has become a unique bonding experience. “It’s one small distraction from the day-in, day-out baseball connection we share,” he said.

The Yankees have embraced the relaxed facial hair policy, with Boone remarking on how quickly it has become normalized in the clubhouse. “I don’t think about it,” he stated.

With the team’s success, Wells is focused on maintaining his beard without letting it grow too wild as they continue to win.
