Yankees Eye Kahley Jansen as Closer Amid Williams Struggles

NEW YORK — The New York Yankees are reportedly considering a trade for Los Angeles Angels closer Kenley Jansen as an alternative to Devin Williams, who has struggled since joining the team from the Milwaukee Brewers last December. The Yankees expected Williams to replicate his previous success, including winning the National League Reliever of the Year award twice, but his early performance has raised concerns.
As of mid-April, Williams has faltered in his role, and the Yankees may need to seek a more dependable option. St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley is also a name generating buzz, but his expiring contract will attract interest from numerous teams, complicating New York’s pursuit.
Jansen, who has previously pitched for the Boston Red Sox, Atlanta Braves, and Los Angeles Dodgers, has been impressive this season, recording four saves in six appearances with a perfect ERA. His current performance could make him a valuable asset for a Yankees squad eager to return to the World Series.
“Kenley has the winning pedigree and experience we need for tough games,” said a Yankees official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “If he becomes available, we will consider all options.”
However, Jansen’s situation in Los Angeles remains complicated, as the Angels are currently on a winning streak and may prefer to hold onto him. Yet, since his contract only extends through this season, the Angels might be open to trade discussions if presented with a compelling offer.
The potential of seeing Jansen don Yankees pinstripes would undoubtedly stir frustration among Red Sox fans, especially given that Boston currently employs former Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman as their own closer. It remains to be seen if the Yankees will act on this idea or explore other trade prospects.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox are also facing their own pitching struggles, as starting pitcher Richard Fitts recently landed on the Injured List due to shoulder pain, joining teammates Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford, and Lucas Giolito on the sidelines.
Boston’s chief baseball officer, Craig Breslow, had anticipated a more stable starting rotation after acquiring Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler, but the team’s pitching depth has quickly become a pressing concern. The team’s recent injuries and inconsistent performances may prompt Breslow to seek additional pitching resources, though a blockbuster trade is not necessary.
Among potential targets for Boston is Angels starter Kyle Hendricks, while another intriguing option could be Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Bobby Miller, who might soon be available after fluctuating between the minors and majors. Selected 29th overall in the 2020 MLB Draft, Miller possesses considerable talent but has struggled with consistency.
“Miller could be a low-risk, high-reward opportunity,” an American League scout said. “He has shown flashes of brilliance, and a fresh start with a different organization could help him reach his potential.”
With various teams vying for pitching depth, competition for Miller could increase. As Boston assesses its options, it remains to be seen how the ongoing trade discussions and injuries will impact both their plans and the overall landscape in the league.
