Yankees Eye Luis Arraez, Gavin Lux to Bolster Infield
The New York Yankees are actively exploring trade options to strengthen their infield, with discussions centering on San Diego Padres infielder Luis Arraez and Los Angeles Dodgers utility player Gavin Lux, according to ESPN‘s Jeff Passan. The Yankees, who have already addressed first base by signing Paul Goldschmidt, are now looking to fill gaps at second and third base.
Arraez, 28, is entering the final year of his contract and is projected to earn $14.6 million in 2025. Known for his elite bat-to-ball skills, Arraez has won three batting titles and posted a .314/.346/.392 slash line in 2024. However, his defensive limitations and lack of power make him a polarizing trade target. The Padres, facing payroll constraints, may consider moving him to alleviate financial pressure.
Lux, 27, is a more versatile option, with experience at second base, shortstop, and the outfield. Coming off a season where he hit .251/.320/.383, Lux is arbitration-eligible and projected to earn $2.7 million in 2025. His affordability and remaining club control make him an attractive target for the Yankees, who are already above the competitive balance tax threshold.
The Yankees’ infield currently features Goldschmidt at first base and Anthony Volpe at shortstop, with Jazz Chisholm Jr. likely to occupy one of the remaining spots. DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera are internal options, but the team is seeking an upgrade to solidify their lineup. Arraez’s ability to consistently get on base could complement the power hitters in the Yankees’ lineup, while Lux’s versatility and lower salary make him a practical fit.
Both players come with trade considerations. Arraez’s defensive limitations and high salary could deter the Yankees, while Lux’s inconsistent performance and injury history raise questions about his reliability. The Yankees may also face competition from other teams, such as the Seattle Mariners, who are reportedly interested in Lux.
As the offseason progresses, the Yankees’ pursuit of Arraez or Lux will depend on the trade packages they are willing to offer and their willingness to absorb additional salary. With their sights set on contending in 2025, the Yankees are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to build a championship-caliber roster.
