New York, NY — The New York Yankees are determined to rebound after a disappointing series against the San Francisco Giants, looking to secure a much-needed win against the Kansas City Royals on Monday night.

Despite losing two out of three games to the Giants, manager Aaron Boone has expressed confidence that his team can find success against Kansas City. A crucial factor in this upcoming series could be veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, who boasts a favorable matchup against Royals’ starting pitcher Seth Lugo.

Goldschmidt has faced Lugo 11 times throughout his career, delivering 11 hits, with two of those being home runs. This history bodes well for the Yankees as they aim to capitalize on Goldschmidt’s powerful hitting to secure an early season win. ‘Every at-bat counts, especially early in the season. We need to get off on the right foot,’ Goldschmidt stated.

However, the Yankees’ situation is not without challenges. Out of the likely starting lineup, Goldschmidt has accumulated seven of the team’s 13 career hits against Lugo, which may indicate a dependency on his performance. Among the three Yankees who have at least 11 career at-bats against Lugo, Aaron Judge notably has yet to secure a hit or walk, adding pressure on Goldschmidt to carry the offensive load.

Entering the contest, Goldschmidt holds slightly below-average power numbers for his standards this season. Nonetheless, as temperatures begin to rise in the Northeast, there is optimism that his statistics will improve. At 37 years old, Goldschmidt’s role with the Yankees may be more short-term, but he is certainly providing greater production than last season’s options at first base.

Last season, Anthony Rizzo struggled before injuries sidelined him, and Ben Rice has displayed inconsistency. General Manager Brian Cashman recognized the necessity of enhancing first base production as a priority in the offseason. ‘Paul has been a key addition in that regard,’ Cashman noted.

Goldschmidt’s role could be further adjusted with Giancarlo Stanton‘s anticipated return as the designated hitter. Currently, Rice holds that position and is experiencing a strong start to his 2025 season. If Stanton proves ready to return, a scenario where Rice and Goldschmidt share first base duties may emerge. ‘Resting Paul can be beneficial for both him and the team in the long run,’ Boone commented.

Keeping Goldschmidt healthy for a potential postseason run is essential, given the demands of his age. While first base might not be the most physically taxing position, managing Goldschmidt’s workload is vital. A target of 100 games appears more realistic, as expecting him to play 140 may risk injuries or decline.

Goldschmidt’s significance also transcends the field; his mentorship of younger players like Rice presents an unrecognized advantage for the Yankees. With Rice’s defensive development at first base being crucial, Goldschmidt’s guidance could enhance his progress. Rice transitioned from catcher to first base only last season out of necessity.

Whatever the future holds, the Yankees need Goldschmidt to be a pivotal contributor in their 2025 season. Continued success against Lugo will be integral to building on his positive early-season performance. The Yankees, and Boone, will be counting on their high-profile veteran to deliver against the Royals on Monday night.
