Yankees’ Luke Weaver Set for Extended Absence Due to Hamstring Injury

NEW YORK, New York — New York Yankees pitcher Luke Weaver is expected to be placed on the injured list due to a hamstring injury, potentially sidelining him for four to six weeks. This news comes from multiple reports as the Yankees prepare for their upcoming games.
Weaver, 31, sustained the injury while warming up before the ninth inning on Sunday during the Yankees’ match against the Los Angeles Dodgers. During the game, he pitched only one inning, giving up a home run and striking out one in the Yankees’ 18-2 loss. His performance has been strong this season, with a 3.18 ERA and four saves over his last seven appearances, tallying eight saves and 24 strikeouts overall.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone mentioned, “He felt something when he finished warming up, and then when he went to stretch, he felt something in the middle of his hammy. We’re hoping it’s not too serious.” The team has yet to confirm the injury officially or announce any roster moves after an off-day on Monday.
With Weaver out, Devin Williams is a primary candidate to step in as the closer. Williams is currently 2-2 this season with a 3.29 ERA and has recorded 25 strikeouts, including nine in just his last seven appearances.
As the Yankees prepare for a three-game home series against the Cleveland Guardians starting Tuesday night, they expect right-hander Miguel Cruz to return from the injured list, filling in for Weaver’s spot. Cruz has shown promise this season, boasting a 2.66 ERA with 35 strikeouts in 23 ⅔ innings pitched.
The Yankees currently hold a record of 36-22, maintaining a six-game lead in the American League East despite recent struggles and injuries within the bullpen. Boone’s unit has performed well overall, ranking in the top ten for wins above replacement. However, losing Weaver, the team’s most consistent reliever, poses a significant challenge moving forward.
