Yankees Royals Alds Game 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As the New York Yankees prepare for Game 3 of the American League Division Series against the Kansas City Royals, manager Aaron Boone has yet to determine who will start at first base. The series is currently tied 1-1, with the critical game set to take place at Kauffman Stadium.

Boone has been noncommittal about his choice, despite strong performances from his options. “I haven’t made that decision yet,” Boone stated during a video conference call with reporters. “It’s one I’m still deliberating on.”

First baseman Anthony Rizzo is sidelined with two fractured fingers. In his place, Jon Berti and Oswaldo Cabrera have both performed admirably, despite neither being a natural choice for the position. Cabrera, who started Game 1, went 1-for-4 with a double. Berti, making his first career start at first base in Game 2, showcased his defensive skills with a diving catch and a smooth handling of a cutoff throw, ultimately resulting in an unassisted double play.

Boone’s decision-making is influenced by both offensive and defensive considerations. Berti is 3-for-5 in his career against Royals’ Game 3 starter Seth Lugo, providing a potential edge. Boone commented, “It was really good to see Jon handle first base so well in his first go-around at that, and really give quality at-bats.”

The Yankees are also contemplating the defensive setup. While Cabrera could feature as a switch-hitter shortstop, Berti might continue at first base. Anthony Volpe has also been considered, although Boone might prioritize better defense over batting. Volpe is hitless in his six previous at-bats against Lugo. Cabrera’s versatility makes him a valid contender as well, especially as a switch hitter who is stronger from the left side.

Boone suggested that part of his decision would focus on bench strategy and future innings rather than just the starting lineup. “Trying to make the best decision,” he said. “It’s not always just necessarily who starts the game, but how it sets you up on the bench.”

The Yankees and Royals are set to face off at 7:08 p.m. E.T. on Wednesday evening. The outcome of Boone’s decision could play a crucial role as the Yankees aim to advance in the series.
