Yankees Plan Position Shift for Chisholm Amid Rehab Assignment

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The New York Yankees are preparing for a potential shift in their lineup next week as infielder Jazz Chisholm, who hasn’t played since April 29 due to a high-grade right oblique strain, begins a rehab assignment on Thursday night with the Somerset Patriots. Chisholm is expected to return to his 2024 Yankees position, starting at third base instead of second base, where he has played this season.
The decision comes as the Yankees express confidence in DJ LeMahieu’s performance at second base since his return on May 13. LeMahieu, a three-time Gold Glove winner, has played predominantly at third base in recent years but has excelled at his current position this season.
Manager Aaron Boone indicated that no final decision on the lineup has been made. “We’ll see,” said Boone. “I want [Chisholm] to work over there [at third] this week and in his games over there to keep that flexibility and we’ll make that decision one way or another.” Chisholm is anticipated to play two or three games with Somerset before his return.
LeMahieu’s future at third base remains uncertain, as all 10 of his starts this season have been at second. Through Tuesday’s game, he was batting .206 with one home run and three RBIs. Peraza, another option for third base, has struggled as well, hitting .165 with three homers and 10 RBIs in 34 games.
Chisholm, willingly adjusting to a new position, adds depth to the Yankees’ roster. “He’s been awesome,” Boone commended. “He wants to win and is willing to do whatever it takes for the team.” The Yankees aim to finalize their lineup plans soon as they look to improve their performance on the field.
