The New York Yankees have advanced to the World Series after defeating the Cleveland Guardians in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) on Saturday. The game, played at Progressive Field in Cleveland, saw the Yankees triumph with a 5-2 win.

This victory marks the Yankees’ first return to the World Series since 2009, ending the franchise’s second-longest pennant drought. The team showcased strong performances from their lineup top, especially designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton, and relied on a nearly flawless bullpen throughout the series.

The Yankees managed to overcome an initial 0-2 deficit in Game 5 with Stanton hitting a two-run homer in the sixth inning, which tied the game and pushed it into extra innings. The decisive moment came in the top of the 10th inning with Juan Soto‘s three-run home run, sealing the victory for the Yankees.

Cleveland’s errors contributed to their loss, highlighted by a botched catch by shortstop Gabriel Arias, which turned a potential double play into three unearned runs for the Yankees. This was symptomatic of the Guardians’ performance throughout the series, where their margin for error was notably slim.

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Guardians, whose last World Series title was in 1948, continue to hold baseball’s longest championship drought.

As the Yankees await their next opponent, fans anticipate a major market showdown in the World Series. They will face either the Los Angeles Dodgers or the New York Mets, promising an exciting matchup for baseball enthusiasts. If the Dodgers prevail, it will mark the 11th Yankees-Dodgers World Series meeting, the first since 1981. Alternatively, a Mets victory would result in the second-ever “Subway Series” between the two New York teams.
