Yankees Players Celebrate Home Run At Yankee Stadium

NEW YORK — The New York Yankees are adjusting their lineup ahead of their game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, aiming for a strategic advantage against the left-handed starter Nestor Cortes. Manager Aaron Boone has made notable changes, including moving Paul Goldschmidt to the leadoff spot for the first time in his career.

After an impressive opening day that saw catcher Austin Wells hit the first leadoff home run for a catcher, the Yankees will shift lineups on March 30, 2025. Wells, who had previously taken the top spot, will now bat sixth. Cody Bellinger will follow Goldschmidt in the two-hole and is set to be joined by Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Anthony Volpe in the order.

Boone’s decision to place Goldschmidt at the top was part of a calculated strategy against Cortes, whose sweeping slider is historically challenging for left-handed hitters. This prompted the Yankees to opt for right-handed batters in crucial positions, with Pablo Reyes moving to third base and Jasson Dominguez as designated hitter.

Speaking on the change, Boone noted, “We’re looking at the matchups play by play. It’s important to have a lineup that can adjust based on the opposing pitcher, and Nestor is strong against lefties. We believe this gives us the best chance to win.”

As for their defensive strategy, Bellinger will transition from center field to left field, allowing Tracy Grisham, known more for his defensive skills, to take over in center. Boone emphasized the importance of flexibility within the roster, stating, “We want to be able to mix and match guys depending on the pitcher we’re facing. It’s about optimizing our lineup for every game.”

Previously, the Yankees celebrated their season opener on March 28, where they beat the Brewers 4-2, thanks in part to Carlos Rodon’s stellar pitching performance. Rodon, filling in for ace Gerrit Cole due to an elbow injury, pitched 5 2/3 innings, yielding only one run and notching 13 swing-and-miss strikes.

The new approach reflects a broader strategy for the 2025 season, with Boone emphasizing an adaptable lineup designed to respond in real-time to changing game conditions. “Flexibility might be the name of the game this year,” Boone said. “We just want to put our best foot forward every time out.”
