NEW YORK — The New York Yankees have reached an agreement with utilityman Jon Berti on a one-year, $2 million contract, a league source confirmed to The Athletic on Thursday. The deal, which includes $1.3 million in potential performance bonuses, is pending a physical and bolsters the Yankees’ bench ahead of spring training.

Berti, 35, brings versatility to a Yankees infield that currently features a rookie projected at third base and two Gold Glove defenders recovering from offseason surgeries. The veteran also has major-league experience at all three outfield positions, providing flexibility for manager Aaron Boone.

The Miami Marlins non-tendered Berti in November after an injury-plagued 2024 season that would have put him in line for a salary approaching $4 million through arbitration. Berti joined the Yankees late last season and appeared in two playoff rounds during their postseason run.

A native of Troy, Michigan, Berti was an 18th-round draft pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011. He played college baseball at Bowling Green State University and eventually found a role with the Marlins, where he became known for his speed, defense, and versatility. Despite being a slightly below-average hitter with a 92 OPS+, Berti contributed 2.4 WAR (per Baseball Reference) in each of his last two seasons with Miami.

In 2022, Berti stole 41 bases and followed up with a .748 OPS across 133 games in 2023. His performance helped the Marlins secure 84 wins and a wild-card spot in the National League playoffs last season.

Berti’s signing adds depth to a Yankees roster looking to rebound from a disappointing 2024 campaign. His ability to play multiple positions and contribute on the basepaths could prove valuable as the team aims to compete in a highly competitive American League East division.
