BRONX, N.Y. — The New York Yankees added a seasoned arm to their bullpen Tuesday by signing veteran reliever Adam Ottavino to a major league contract. The announcement comes as closer Devin Williams was placed on the paternity list following the birth of his child.

To make room for Ottavino on the 40-man roster, JT Brubaker has been transferred to the 60-day injured list. The Yankees hope Ottavino’s experience and familiar face will bolster their pitching staff during an early-season challenge.

“We believe Adam can provide valuable innings for us while Devin is away,” Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman stated. “His experience and past performance in New York give us confidence he can slot right in.”

Ottavino, 39, returns to the Bronx after previously playing for the Yankees in 2019 and 2020, where he posted a remarkable 1.90 ERA during his initial season with the team. Over his MLB career spanning 14 seasons, he has amassed a 3.49 ERA with 724 regular season appearances, including 46 saves and 194 holds.

Despite being considered past his prime, Ottavino has shown consistency in recent years, making at least 60 appearances each season from 2019 to 2023. Last season with the New York Mets, he recorded a 4.34 ERA over 60 appearances but maintained an impressive 11.3 strikeouts per nine innings, slightly above his career average of 10.4.

The right-hander’s capacity to contribute should not be underestimated. “I still believe I can help a team win,” said Ottavino in a recent interview. “I know the New York market, and I look forward to competing for the Yankees once again.”

With Williams unavailable, Luke Weaver is expected to step into the closer role temporarily. The Yankees are navigating an injury-riddled start to the season, and Ottavino’s signing may provide both depth and a cushion.

For the Yankees, this low-risk signing also signifies a savvy move in an effort to stabilize their bullpen. Cashman noted, “Every inning matters, especially during these early months. We’re looking to get reliable outings while maintaining our depth as the season goes along.”

As Ottavino prepares to rejoin the Yankees, expectations remain cautious yet hopeful; the team aims to utilize his experience to navigate through the challenges ahead while building momentum.
