25-Year-Old Dancer Dies from Severe Allergic Reaction to Cookie, Family Demands Justice
A talented 25-year-old dancer from the UK, Órla Baxendale, tragically lost her life after suffering from an anaphylactic shock caused by a severe allergic reaction to a cookie sold at Stew Leonard’s in Connecticut. The cookie, manufactured by Cookies United, contained undisclosed peanuts, leading to the devastating incident.
The family’s lawyers released a statement expressing their gratitude for the global support and tributes pouring in for Órla, who moved to New York City to pursue her dream career as a world-class dancer. They described her as a radiant and brave soul who left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her.
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection revealed that the Florentine Cookies sold at Stew Leonard’s also contained eggs, a crucial detail that was missing from the label. People with peanut or egg allergies are at risk of a severe or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.
Stew Leonard’s had previously issued a recall for the Florentine Cookies, stating that they contained peanuts. However, the manufacturer, Cookies United, claims to have notified 11 Stew Leonard’s employees via email in July that the cookies now contained peanuts. Stew Leonard Jr., the president and CEO of Stew Leonard’s, expressed surprise, as the company’s chief safety officer was unaware of this information.
Órla Baxendale, an alumna of the renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in Manhattan, had become an integral part of the New York dance world since moving there in 2018. She had danced with various companies and choreographers, including her most recent work with MOMIX. Her sudden loss deeply saddens her friends, colleagues, and all who knew her, and the Ailey School pays tribute to her bright spirit and boundless talent.
As the family grieves the loss of their beloved Órla, they demand justice for the negligent disclosure of ingredients in the cookie and will seek accountability for the tragic consequences that followed.
