15-Year-Old Marks Historic Debut in Premier League

LEICESTER, England — Fifteen-year-old Jeremy Monga made history Monday night by becoming the second-youngest player to debut in the Premier League, coming onto the field in the 74th minute during a match at King Power Stadium.
With the score at 3-0, Monga was introduced by Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, cementing his place in the record books at 15 years and 271 days. He is now second only to Ethan Nwaneri, who played at 15 years and 181 days in September 2022.
Unlike his teammates, Monga’s jersey did not bear a sponsor’s logo. This was due to him being under the legal gambling age of 18, while Leicester’s main sponsor is BC Game, a company involved in cryptocurrency gaming.
Despite the scoreline and the atmosphere dampening for some fans, those who remained in the stands erupted with cheers as Monga took to the pitch, showing enthusiasm and support for the young talent.
Monga was a star in England’s Under-16 side and trained with the first team occasionally. His involvement with senior football began earlier this season, when he impressed during training sessions under the former Leicester manager Steve Cooper.
“We have a lot of confidence in him,” van Nistelrooy said in January. “Jeremy is a great talent that for me is a vital part of the future of this club.”
The young winger, who primarily plays on the left and takes on defenders with confidence, had not appeared in any previous Premier League matches. However, he was previously on the bench for an FA Cup match against Manchester United in February.
Leicester’s academy enjoys Category One status, attracting top talent and progressing players toward professional careers. Currently, players cannot sign a professional contract until they’re 17. However, Monga’s situation stands out due to his extraordinary talent and young age.
In light of recent academy movements, Leicester hopes to retain Monga, especially after the departure of another promising talent, Trey Nyoni, to Liverpool in September 2023. Nyoni secured a place among the Reds’ first team, appearing in 15 matches since his transfer.
“We want to avoid situations like Trey’s move to Liverpool,” said a club source. “We’re focused on providing a pathway for Jeremy and ensuring he reaches his potential in a Leicester City shirt.”
Van Nistelrooy added, “We are planning that. His education is of great importance, and we need to ensure his development aligns with his studies.”
The club is expected to engage in discussions with Monga and his family in the near future to outline a plan for his progression within the team.
